What is a Housing Allowance?

A housing allowance is a special support for families with children and youth households aged 18-28 years. The application is made to the Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan), and the calculation takes into account your accommodation (size and cost), your income, and your family situation. You can receive a housing allowance regardless of whether you rent your accommodation first or second-hand, or if you own your home with a slightly lower income. A prerequisite is that the child lives wholly or partly with you.

Good to Know About Housing Allowances and Alternate Living

• You can receive a housing allowance until the month your child turns 18, or has completed their studies at upper secondary school.
• Your child must live with you for you to be eligible for a housing allowance. If the child lives alternately or more with the other parent, it affects the size of the allowance. This means that more time spent with you results in a larger housing allowance and vice versa.
• If the child lives with you less than about half the time, you must have at least two rooms and a kitchen, and the living area must be at least 40 square meters.
• The allowance is granted for 12 months at a time, providing a stable foundation. After that, you only need to reapply to continue benefiting from this support.
• It is important to report changes that may affect eligibility for a housing allowance as soon as possible to the Social Insurance Agency. An example is if the child starts living more or less with you. This reduces the risk of you being required to repay.
• If you are entitled to more money, you will receive it faster by reporting changes promptly. If the application is complete, processing takes about 30 days.
• The allowance is paid out on the 27th of each month.
